Irish Hills Girl Scout Troop#215
Goes to Michigan International Speedway
Saturday May 20th 2006.

Irish Hills Girl Scout Troop #215 paid a
visit to Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan.
Upon arriving they would meet with Jackson
Model Rocketry Club which was holding its monthly rocket launch. The girls had
come to the launch not just to view JMRC members launch rockets but rather to
build and fly their own. With a Troop of 23 girls this proved to be a
“challenge”. But with the experienced help of JMRC members: Mike Schneider,
Jo-Anne Bergman, Dale Hodgson and Roger Sadowsky along with the Girl Scout Troop
Leaders: Berta Sadowsky, Shelly Babcock and volunteer parents the “Build
Session” went just fine. The rockets to be flown were the Quest Viper kits. The
motor that would be used was a Quest “A” 6-4. After a few hours of construction
and time for the glue to dry the rockets were prepped for flight.
Before the troop would fly their Quest Vipers
there was a Drag Race to be run. The match up of Emma Sadowsky and Dale Hodgson
flying Estes Fat Boy’s. This “Grudge” match looks to have No end in sight as
these two have raced before with Emma winning the first round. Dale labeled his
Fat Boy with “Emma is going down”. The question of who was going to win this
round was asked of Troop #215. It was about a 50/50 ratio of girls that thought
that Emma would win and girls that said that Dale would win.
Upon review of pictures and video you can
clearly see that Dale had the “Hole shot” by one Fat boy length. Emma was close
behind. However in the end it looks that Dale Hodgson was the winner of the
second round. However, his Fat Boy had some damage on landing as a fin was
broken. The fin has since been repaired and ready for round #3 of the Emma &
Dale “Grudge” match of Fat Boy Drag Racing. To be continued at M.I.S. on Sunday
June 25th 2006. Sunday, Sunday, Sunday! BE THERE!
Once the Drag race was over it was on with
launching 23 Quest Viper Rockets. Each one of the girls was able to press the
launch button that would send their creation into the Beautiful Blue sky for
some very nice flights. Most of these girls had not flown rockets before. It was
a very exciting experience to go through watching the faces of the girls as
their rockets “Blasted” off the launch pad and they awaited the deployment of
the rockets parachute. All 23 landed safely and with the proper preparation can
be flown many times over.
The “Feedback” from the Girl Scout #215 was
a” Positive” one.
Many parents and girls alike really enjoyed
themselves and said they plan to come out for another one of JMRC’s launches at
M.I.S. this summer.
Again thanks to all of the JMRC members that
helped with the Girl Scouts “Build Session” and the JMRC Members that Ran the
Launch. With out all of those that helped this day would not have been the
“Success” that it turned out to be.
Thanks and Best Regards:
